Private and public archives in the 21st c. / Archives privées et archives publiques au XXIe siècle

The International Centre for Archival Research (IcarUS) will hold its next Spring conference on May 23rd-25th, on the theme: “Archives privées et archives publiques au XXIe siècle / Private and public archives in the 21st c.”. The conference will take place in the conference center of Campus Condorcet in Paris-Aubervilliers and is organised by Institut de Recherche et d’Histoire des Textes (CNRS) with the support of the French Ministry of Culture and the National Archives (Archives nationales).

The conference will study the most innovative and succesful initiatives aiming at an integrated approach of private an public records of the past, present and future. It will seek to define means of action towards an optimal consideration of private records and their specificities in relation to public archives.

ICARUS is an international association gathering 180 institutions and corporate bodies involved in preserving archival documents, giving access to archives, and/or providing education and research on them. Members are mostly in Europe with more than 30 coutries represented on the continent, from Malta and Portugal to Finland and Georgia, but also in Canada and the United States. As a cooperation network, ICARUS gives its member an opportunity to get to know each other and to get acquainted to their practices, as well as to discover and get to know people and methods in other domains. The organisations in ICARUS are very diverse: national archives and public archives, but also private archives, esp. Church archives, private companies, research institutions, universities, associations, research labs. The link between them is the interest for archival material, which is not always the core of their activity, but always the center of a dynamic engagement, as for the digital humanities department of the university in Passay or the Computer Vision Center in Barcelona.

The network catalyzes joint initiatives and creates common infrastructures for the use of all. ICARUS is the institutional support for the virtual archives Monasterium, for the Matricula portal (birth, marriage and death registers from Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Poland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia), and the network of Topotheques (community virtual archives).
